PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This 10.5-hour continuing education program is designed to enhance the professional competencies of graduate-level counselors and licensed mental health professionals by integrating Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, nature-based/ecotherapy approaches, and somatic therapies within a trauma-informed care framework. The training emphasizes neurobiological, developmental, and relational perspectives that support evidence-based treatment of trauma across the lifespan. This CE retreat also provides trauma-informed, evidence-based training for clinicians working with children, adolescents, neurodivergent adults, and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Rooted in both theoretical knowledge and applied techniques, the program supports professional development, personal reflection, and a strengthened sense of clinical purpose. A collaborative and supportive learning environment encourages meaningful dialogue, peer consultation, and connection among participants.

Through structured lectures, experiential activities, and case-based discussions, participants will gain practical skills in trauma assessment, treatment planning, and intervention. The curriculum promotes a deeper understanding of trauma responses, mechanisms of healing, and the importance of therapeutic attunement, cultural humility, and ethical practice in fostering lasting change.

Course Description

This 4.0-hour course focuses on the application of trauma-focused assessment and intervention methods with neurodivergent adults and individuals with IDD, including EMDR therapy (AIP model; 8-phase, 3-pronged protocol), CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, sensory-integration approaches, and eco-somatic interventions. These methods are supported by contemporary peer-reviewed literature documenting high rates of trauma and PTSD in individuals with IDD and autism, the under-recognition of trauma-related symptoms, and emerging evidence for EMDR and adapted trauma-focused interventions in these populations.
The program also addresses broader practice content, such as trauma-informed care in disability services, the neurobiological vulnerabilities associated with FASD, diagnostic overshadowing, and systemic barriers that limit access to equitable trauma treatment.
Throughout the workshop, the instructor reviews the empirical support, limitations, and risks of each approach (e.g., limited trials for EMDR and sensory-based interventions in these populations and the potential for destabilization or sensory overload). Emphasis is placed on preparation, stabilization, environmental accommodations, collaborative pacing, and criteria for when EMDR or trauma processing may be contraindicated or require modification. The content is designed to enhance advanced trauma-focused, neurodiversity-affirming practice.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify at least five examples of traumatic events and describe their short- and long-term adverse effects on mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
  2. Explain at least three ways trauma affects neurodivergent populations, including individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and co-occurring mental health conditions.
  3. Demonstrate at least two sensory integration applications and eco-somatic techniques in simulated scenarios, integrating them with EMDR procedures to enhance trauma healing.
  4. Identify at least three key differences among EMDR, CBT, and DBT by categorizing their core methodologies and evaluating their relative strengths in treating trauma in neurodivergent clients.

Course Description

Have you ever wondered why some children and adults seem more resilient to others? Have you noticed that some of your friends freeze when you wish they would just run away? This course will walk you through the elements of childhood trauma from understanding the brain and behavior to how to impact positive change beyond the things that have happened to us. This course explores children’s brain development—from anatomy to symptoms—and evidence-based approaches to address both symptoms and underlying causes. It uses an AIP approach combined with Polyvagal Theory through the eight phases of EMDR therapy, using a social development framework to map history and identify targets by age. This intermediate-level course introduces the impact of trauma on schools, workplace, and relationships.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify at least 10 key brain structures and nervous system components involved in managing anxiety, safety, and trauma.
  • Recognize three core principles of Polyvagal Theory and differentiate between ventral and dorsal vagus nerve functions in trauma response.
  • Identify key legal and ethical considerations in assessing and treating childhood trauma.
  • Demonstrate at least 5 research-backed interventions to regulate anxiety, process trauma, and foster emotional connectedness.
  • Apply the AIP Model through EMDR’s eight-phase protocol, ensuring effective trauma processing for children.
