This 12-hour continuing education training is designed for professional practitioners who wish to integrate Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy into their couples therapy practice. Couples often seek therapy to resolve conflict and deepen connection, yet unresolved developmental trauma can complicate this process. Partners may even unconsciously use one another to re-enact past wounds, turning relational struggles into mirrors of intrapsychic pain. In this sense, many couples enter therapy seeking a relational solution to an individual problem. This workshop introduces a comprehensive framework for weaving EMDR into couples therapy, highlighting strengths, limitations, and opportunities for growth in applying EMDR across all eight phases of treatment. Through a blend of lecture, case studies, and live demonstrations, participants will develop practical strategies for addressing trauma-related relational wounds—including attachment disruptions and omission traumas—and their impact on adult intimacy.

Key Learning Areas & Topics
Participants will:

  • Gain a deep understanding of the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model and the eight phases of EMDR therapy.
  • Apply a structured framework for treatment planning and documentation in conjoint sessions.
  • Explore clinical decision-making strategies within the therapeutic relationship.
  • Apply EMDR to present-day conflicts while uncovering links to unresolved past trauma.
  • Develop interventions for highly reactive couples resistant to traditional approaches.
  • Acquire evidence-based methods to address infidelity, breaches of trust, emotional disconnection, and trauma-based interactional patterns.
  • Strengthen skills in session pacing, conjoint reprocessing (Phase Four with partner present), and closure/integration.
  • Identify and avoid common errors in EMDR couple’s work.
  • Use practical steps to facilitate trauma processing, resolve conflicts, and enhance relational bonds.

The presenter will guide participants through a complex trauma couple case, illustrating how EMDR interventions—when grounded in the therapeutic relationship—support regulation, deepen processing, and foster connection.
By the end of this training, participants will:

  • Be equipped with clear, step-by-step strategies for integrating EMDR into couples therapy.
  • Sharpen their EMDR skills across all phases of treatment.
  • Expand their clinical toolbox for addressing both individual and relational healing.
  • Gain the confidence to support couples in creating healthier, more resilient, and more fulfilling relationships.

This training program is tailored for professional practitioners aiming to incorporate EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy into their couples therapy practice. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, the eight phases of EMDR therapy, and the intricacies of treatment planning and documentation. The training will provide specific techniques for facilitating trauma processing, resolving conflicts, and enhancing relational dynamics within couples using EMDR.

The program is designed to equip therapists with the essential skills and knowledge to address complex issues such as infidelity, breaches of trust, and emotional disconnection, thereby promoting healthier and more resilient relationships. Participants will deepen their understanding of how trauma-related issues influence relationship dynamics and will be provided with practical tools to improve communication, connection, and healing between partners. The course also covers in-depth case studies, ethical considerations, and strategies for future planning with couples, emphasizing the critical importance of self-care for therapists engaged in couples’ therapy.

Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify three benefits of integrating EMDR into couple therapy.
  2. Outline the eight phases of EMDR therapy and their application in couple therapy.
  3. Describe three elements of the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model.
  4. Describe two assessments used to evaluate relationship dynamics.
  5. Identify three contraindications for using EMDR therapy with couples.
  6. Recognize three impacts of PTSD/trauma on relationships.
  7. Identify seven questions to ask during a couple's history interview.
  8. Identify three areas to assess during individual interviews in couple therapy.
  9. Identify two aspects to address during couple’s follow-up sessions after initial interviews.
  10. Develop a brief vignette and practical examples to demonstrate the application of the eight EMDR phases in couples therapy.
  11. Implement at least two strategies for planning future EMDR therapy sessions and resources for couples.
  12. Identify three techniques for integrating EMDR into couple therapy.
  13. Identify at least two EMDR application techniques specific to couple’s therapy.
